The Indiana University School of Medicine, the nation’s second largest medical school with more than 1,200 M.D. students, is the life sciences research hub for the university. With nearly 1,600 full- and part-time faculty, the school holds more than $244 million in research grants and contracts, including more than $116 million in awards from the National Institutes of Health. It hosts the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and federally designated centers of excellence in cancer, kidney disease, Alzheimer disease and related disorders, alcohol research, arthritis and sexually transmitted disease centers on both the pediatric and adult levels. The school hosts or is affiliated with 35 research institutes and centers, including the Regenstrief Institute, an international leader in medical informatics. Seventeen research cores with expertise in proteomics, genotyping, protein expression, high resolution microscopy, in-vivo imaging and other advanced technologies provide services to academic and private sector scientists. With its entrepreneurial emphasis and its main campus’ location adjacent to downtown Indianapolis, the school is a key player in the city’s life sciences economic development initiative. In addition, the school educates students, promotes research and develops business and academic collaborations at eight regional campuses across the state. Investing significantly in its research enterprise, the IU School of Medicine has added more than 762,000 square feet of research space at its Indianapolis and regional campuses since 2000.
